Workshop One with Sarah Doody - Rapid Research: How to Plan, Conduct, and Synthesise User Research 

Far too often, teams start out building before they’ve identified the specific problem they aim to solve and developed a deep understanding of the people who have that problem. This results in a common set of symptoms that we’ve all experienced: feature creep, debates about priorities, late delivery dates, bloated budgets, burnt out teams, little or no adoption of a product, and more. But it doesn’t have to be this way. 

To avoid these symptoms, teams must stay focused and anchor themselves on people and a problem. But that’s easier said than done. The excitement and rush that comes from building and creating is contagious. However, we must resist the race to get into the create and build phase prematurely. Instead, we have to invest time in the research phase so we can get to know people and the problems we hope to solve for them and use these learnings as guide-posts to anchor us once we get to the create & build phase.

In this workshop we will de-mystify the user research phase. You will see how research doesn’t have to be a lengthy and expensive process that can only be done in a mirrored room. You will walk away with an understanding of exactly what you’ll need to plan and execute your own user research projects.

Of course, we’ll also practice creating some of the deliverables needed to run a successful research project including a research goals summary, screener, interview guide, and more. You’ll be able to use your own product or there will be an example research project you can use throughout the workshop. 

Workshop Goals

  • Participants will have a renewed understanding of why user research is important and how it can help them prevent a lot of common problems they encounter during product development. 
  • Participants will have the confidence to go out and start doing research because they’ll now have a blueprint for exactly how to do it.
  • Participants will have the beginnings of a research plan for their product and will gain experience by doing practice interviews.

Sarah Doody is a User Experience Designer and Product Strategist based in New York City. As a designer, Sarah works helps new companies assess their idea, understand their customers, and design their MVP. For companies with a product already in market, Sarah helps optimise their user experience through metrics, research, and her years of product design knowledge. 

In addition to consulting, Sarah publishes a popular weekly newsletter, The UX Notebook, and writes regularly for the design community. Sarah also teaches on UX and previously created the curriculum for and taught General Assembly’s first 12-week UX immersive. 

When not thinking about design, Sarah is training for her next marathon or planning a trip to explore a new part of the world.


Workshop Two with Vitaly Friedman - Smart Responsive Design Patterns and Techniques

In this workshop, Vitaly Friedman (editor-in-chief of Smashing Magazine), will cover innovative interaction patterns, practical techniques, clever tricks and useful strategies you need to be aware of when working on responsive websites. From responsive modules co clever navigation patterns and web form design techniques; the workshop will provide you with everything you need to know today to start designing better responsive experiences tomorrow.

Most techniques are borrowed from mid-size and large-scale real-life projects, such as large eCommerce projects, online magazines and web applications. We won't cover the basics, but rather advanced and innovative examples of RWD in action.

In the workshop we'll be taking a closer look at: 

  • New interaction patterns for small and large screens, and how user habits of interacting with technology are changing today and will change in the future
  • Effective tools and techniques that can support and enhance your personal workflow when working on any responsive design project
  • An overview of clever practical techniques for improving UX of responsive sites incl. navigation and search,
  • Responsive Design Patterns and innovative approaches to designing "responsive modules" such as mega-drop downs, tables, calendars, multi-level menus, maps, carousels and web forms
  • How to apply clever patterns such as improved off-canvas navigation, assistant pattern, smart URL design, priority+ pattern, vertical media queries, “view mode” approach, lazy loading, autocomplete, type-ahead search, filters, portrait/landscape orientation change, inventory-based sliders, the country selector and responsive iconography
  • How to craft delightful interfaces with smooth transitions, clever animations and improve perceived performance along the way
  • How to optimise responsive websites for better mobile UX, faster data input and higher conversion rates
  • Design anti-patterns to avoid when designing a responsive site to not run into performance issues and “slow UX decay”
